Caring for the Elderly-Abuse in Assisted Living Homes “Every year an estimated 2.1 million older Americans are victims of physical, psychological or other forms of abuse and neglect” (Deel, C., 2009). These individuals deserve to be treated with care and respect. The purpose of this paper is to describe and address these kinds of abuse and the role nurses and caregivers play in the care of the elderly adults. Being unqualified and understaffed are two of the leading causes of abuse. “Culture may play a significant role in offering insights into circumstances in which abuse occurs (Rytterstrom, 2013 p.2).

This theft could be committed by other residents, visitors or caregivers. Many residents struggle with keeping their independence. Some are capable of bathing, eating or walking on their own, while others need help having their wheelchairs pushed or sitting in showers to become clean. These residents usually only get bathed two or three times per week. Residents are no longer able to pick and choose foods they eat. It is a situation of eat or do without. The elderly are the fastest growing part of the population in the United States. Due to this increase in the elderly population, it is anticipated that abuse will increase.
