From 1991 until the end of 2012, globally installed capacity has increased from about 2GW [1] to over 31GW [2], with an annual growth rate of about 2%. With this increasing focus on sustainable development and the rise in popularity of, renewable energy generation, as a clean energy source, it is predicted that the worldwide installed wind capacity will be more than double by 2012 and 2020 [3]. Rapid advances in wind turbine technology and materials that are being used to make turbines has increased the size and the output of wind turbine, maximizing their efficiency, and potential energy output. There has been a number of multi-MW wind farms that have been set up across various countries Europe and the United States. These wind farms run autonomously and mitigate the load of the traditional fossil fuel burning Power plants. It’s a known fact that the wind tends to blow more strongly and uniformly over the oceans. There has been a lot of ongoing research in establishing large-scale offshore wind farms to satisfy the demand of coastal region. As of 2015, with a total installed capacity of 63,467 MW worldwide, the wind energy is proving to a promising future in catering for the future energy demands. …show more content…
Between 1860 and the First World War, a range of technologies was developed to generate steam, by capturing the sun 's heat, to run engines and irrigation pumps [5]. Solar Photovoltaic cells are one of the most efficient amongst the different solar conversion alternatives. With China producing one-third of the total solar photovoltaic cells and exporting cheaply more than 95 percent of its produce the cost of the producing reliable and clean energy from the sun has significantly reduced [2]. Also with the rapid development and research in the new materials for usage in the solar panels, the efficiency of solar energy conversion has significantly increased. Other than PV cells for harnessing the Solar technology there are a number of other solar energy technologies that compete in the different energy markets. With the various sustained energy implantation policies from governments across the globe, there is a strong growth of solar energy
