While working at Glendale Memorial Hospital, I was able to learn how a hospital functions, the types of services they provide, how to act with patients and their family members, and how to work in a team alongside nurses. As someone who has declared the pre-health track, this experience was able to guide me and help me determine the career path I would take. On the other hand, working at McDonalds was a completely different experience. Although I was able to work in a team and learn about customer service, the work I did has no application in the career path I have chosen. The problem with a job similar to those at McDonalds is that it does not provide a realistic work environment for those entering any field other than the fast food industry. Instead, a lot of them chose to volunteer and some went above and beyond to be involved in summer programs. For example, one of my classmates applied to a summer program at UCSC and later enrolled in a four-week residential program for math and science and was able to study nanotechnology for two consecutive summers. As she is now in college majoring in Bioengineering, this program benefitted her much more than a part-time job would have. The experience she gained from this program is irreplaceable.
