According to Edward Counsel Maxims, “Beauty is but a lease from nature.” Society pressures women to conform to a standard that limits their unique expressions. A battle rages on within the hearts of women; a constant push and pull of society’s definition of beauty and their own interpretation that struggles to find a common place. Society gives the universal mindset that nature is in control over the beauty of women; however, this is superficial. True beauty will never be limited by appearance because it runs deep within humans, straight into their hearts. Women experience a degrading sense of worth that is magnified through the media and advertisements in modern culture leading to many devastating consequences.
America is a beauty obsessed society that has developed issues such as an increase in cosmetic procedures and marriages that are sustained on an unstable foundation. Women invest enormous amounts of money into cosmetic surgery, “Nearly 11.7 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2007,” and the numbers are rapidly increasing by “ the last ten years”(YMCA). Advertisments exhibiting sexualized bodies of women with big breasts and flawless figures convince girls that the only way men will love them is if they attain the “perfection” showcased by models.
