Marcus Breu's Objectification Of Women

A beautiful woman is the goal of almost every man on this planet. Without a beautiful woman, the man is seemed as “unimportant” to society. In order to validate themselves, they seek out for the young and beautiful girls without knowing that they are creating an environment for women that is a competition. Women are often pit against one another in finance, appearance, and success. A woman who has these qualities are seen as a rarity. Most men are often clueless when it comes down to this form of systematic oppression, but luckily, a few recognize this and try to address it whenever possible. Marcus Breu, a student who graduated with his bachelor’s in women’s studies, took the time to discuss the objectification happening in our society. With his essay, Objectification of Women, he digs deep into the thought process behind it and also ways where women may voluntarily get into a situation where they may be objectified. Nate Pyle, a blogger who discussed the male side of objectification, wrote about how he will approach his son when it comes to these things in his article “Seeing a Woman”. The perspective is informative because no one ever thinks about how harmful this system really is to men and boys. Men are constantly seen as animals with no self-control. Phrases like “boys will be boys” just erase the possibility of a man having a clear head and seeing any woman as themselves, rather than as an object. “The moment you play the victim you fall into the lie that you are simply embodied reaction to external stimuli unable to determine right from wrong, human from flesh”. (Pyle) Men often blame the women for coming out of the house looking like that. “If she didn’t want the attention, why did she dress like that? She should know better.” It is her right to wear whatever she pleases. She does not have to cater to anyone’s eyes. It is the man’s responsibility to see her as just her. “Not just with your eyes, but with your heart.” On the other hand, women are told that men cannot control themselves and that they are dangerous. This causes the “modesty is best” factor. Men choose to do whatever they want to individually. “... a woman’s body is not dangerous...Her body will not cause harm. There are men and then there are the women, deemed as fragile, weaker, and less superior, regardless of social standing. A man without a college degree working under a woman with an MBA would still be taken seriously, regardless of qualifications. This also stems that women are always at competition with one another. In a study Breu had conducted, a 17 year old female had stated, “if I don’t meet the standards that other women in society are at, then I feel inadequate and a lesser being.” To explain this, think of high school. Cheerleaders are often seen as the epitome of beauty, whereas every other girl just fits in wherever they fit in. Some are right below the cheerleaders and some are at the Very Bottom. The female hierarchy is justified by how the attractive the girl is and this leads to girls feeling as if they’re not good enough, which stems to mental illnesses such as body dysmorphia, depression, and anxiety.
