Basketball is my life. Okay maybe it’s not my life, but it’s more than a game to me. It’s a big part of my life and it has been ever since I could pick a ball up. Everyday as a child, coming home from a boring day at school, the only thing I would look forward to was lacing up my sneakers, racing over to the community court, and shooting some hoops. Even in the winter, when there was snow on the ground piled up to almost as tall as I was, I would beg and plead my dad to snow plow the driveway so I could shoot around while freezing my ass off. When I stepped on that court, in my head I was always Allen Iverson, Rip Hamilton, or some other NBA superstar zooming down the court and putting up a shot to win the game. I imagined dunking the ball down in front of thousands of fans, screaming and cheering me on. So Naturally, when people asked what I wanted to do or be when I grew up, I ecstatically replied, “I want to play in the NBA.” This answer was always followed by a chuckle or laugh from the person asking me. I didn’t understand because that’s what I wanted to do with my life, it’s what I loved and I was always taught to follow my dreams. But in reality, my 6 year-old self had no idea that this pipe dream would shatter his heart.

A few more years down the line, around the time when I was 8 or 9. Basketball was still my favorite thing. I watched every game I could on television to try to get better. This is when I started to play in an organized league. I remember seeing…
