Background Essay for “A Few Needs on the Reservation” If someone were to go to one of the reservations, they would see the poor conditions that many of these people live in. Though many treaties were made to provide government aid and funding to the reservation. The funding received by the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) and HIS (Indian Health services) is greatly underfunded. The BIA is responsible for over 560 reservations; which consists of over 2 million tribal members. The BIA must care for many areas and services on the reservations. One of these being housing assistance. With only 10—15% of tribal funding being split between 562 reservations for housing. Approximately 90,000 tribal families are homeless or under housed; they also estimate approximately 40% of the population on some reservations are living in improper housing. In turn Native Americans are afraid to send their children to public schools. This action has caused Native American children to develop paranoid behaviors, undue stress, depression, and suicidal tendencies due to being isolated from others and only seeing the hardships of their family. There was an act passed called the “Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978.” It was passed to prevent Native American children from being removed from their tribe. This was also to nullify the fear the Native American families have of their children being abducted and given to non-indian families. However, many Native Americans still have these fears because social services are still removing Native American children from their schools without any explanations given to the families of these children. Again these acts cause the need for counseling services; however, there is no funding for the reservations to have counseling centers to assist their
