These include: sensory problems, mental retardation, seizures, fragile x syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis. Their sensory problems occur with the pain or even painfully sensitive to the five senses of sound, smell, taste, and feel. “Some children find the feel of clothes touching their skin almost unbearable. Some sounds such as a vacuum cleaner, a ringing telephone, a sudden storm, even the sound of waves lapping the shoreline,” will cause these children to cover their ears and scream (“What Kinds of Health Problems Do Children With Autism Have?”). Children with autism suffer from some kind of mental dysfunction; for example, a child who takes a test may excel on a portion but do poorly on the language portion. Autistic children also suffer from having seizures where they may even have “blackouts” or sudden loss of consciousness that are affected from the abnormal electrical impulses from the brain, which also cause them to have body spasms. Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited type of mental abnormality that occurs within autistic children, where a part of their X chromosome is defective. Religion, spirituality and culture are important influences on health beliefs and behaviors, which leads to implications on the health communication area. Religious, spiritual beliefs and cultural perspective also play important roles in how individuals interpret and explain disability, such as in understanding the autism condition. In a culture like Indonesia, where Islam is the religion, Muslim families tend to have strong family ties and values. Therefore, a study was made to find out about whether and how religious beliefs change parents’ understanding of how to raise a special needs child. Data were drawn from interviews with 5 Muslim parents who have autistic children. Results indicate that religion helps them to accept and understand the condition of their children, and affect their childrearing goals to make the children live independently and find the children’s best potential. Religious perspective also brought them to find an alternative medicine and holistic treatment in order to seek progress for their autistic children (Bolte & Westerwald, 2011, 66-72).
