Each child is special with his/her own growth and development phase. Developmental delay or differences if any, is often not an issue to panic about, but also not an issue to neglect. One of such developmental disorder is autism. Autism is a neurological developmental disorder. Autism is not a single condition, but is a spectrum of disorders. Autism is one of the five developmental disorders listed under autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) apart from Asperger's syndrome, Rett disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive development disorder - not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). The idiom ‘autism spectrum disorders’ is the common classification which is used to illustrate lifetime disorders affecting neurodevelopment of a person. …show more content…
Primarily the signs and symptoms of autism include issues with socialisation, communication or stringent, and, repetitive behaviour and can be seen by 2-3 years of age. How does autism occur is still not been identified. It is known that the information processing capacity of the brain cells is altered in autism. Autism occurs since birth, which means that a child is born autistic and autism is not acquired after birth. There were earlier reports which stated that certain components of vaccine was responsible for autism or a certain theory called Refrigerator mother theory, which stated that children developed autism due to lack of love from the parents, were all dismissed. Children suffering from autism may have trouble making eye contact, is happy to play alone or prefers to be alone, impaired language skills, using gestures, lack of response, delay in speech or repetition of words, hand flapping, rocking back and forth, try to harm themselves (self-injurious behaviour) like banging the head, poking their eyes, poking the skin, etc., and, constantly throw tantrums, walk on their toes, etc. About 50% of the autistic population possess an average or above average …show more content…
Early and intensive behavioural intervention is widely used and has been in use since many years for autistic children and has shown to increase the adaptive and intellectual capability of children with autistic spectrum disorders; however, there are few researches wherein, it has been used in a community backdrop like kinder gardens, pre-schools. In a research study, after success has been achieved, the next step is to check the efficacy of that studied method on a larger scale or in an actual/real environment out of the experimental setup called as effectiveness study. And therefore the role or effect of the early and intensive behavioural intervention on a more realistic environment is necessary to study its success. There has been a mixed review on the efficacy of early and intensive behavioural intervention in community
