Role Models
In professional sports today, there are thousands of professional athletes. Some have more fame than others and have varying levels of influence on young children throughout the world. It is important for all athletes to realize that they are role models. Also to reflect a positive character to the youth around the world. Athletes tend to do things in a selfish manner, not realizing that they have thousands of kids following their every move. According to Solberg and Ringer “professional athletes generally operate with a different set of values and behavioral norms than do non-athletes who participant at a less competitive level” (93).

By breaking the rules in baseball they are showing kids the wrong way to do things. It’s like taking a short cut instead of putting in the hard work that’s necessary. But athletes breaking rules is not only happening in baseball it is all over different professional sports.
Drinking and driving is something that the nation is trying to take extreme measures to stop. Almost every commercial on the television is about drinking responsibly and not drinking and driving. Kids are taught this as well, but not only kid’s teenagers as well. Cowboys defensive linemen Josh Brent is an example of an athlete who believed he was invisible and took the risk of drinking and driving, he got into a one car accident killing his best friend and team mate Jerry Brown. These accidents happen all the time, but due to the fact that he was a NFL player, it got huge media streams. Here’s everyone trying to stop this kind of stuff and then a professional athlete is promoting it. Maybe he wasn’t exactly promoting it but by breaking this law he is setting a bad example for the youth of America.
Most times people see athletes as self-centered people who only care about their selves, and no one else. Even though this can be true with some athletes, it’s not true with all. There are many athletes out there who go out of their way to make sure they are doing whatever it takes to do right for the youth and
