Imagine being 19 years old, playing baseball in the minor leagues and then one day being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma; a type of cancer. Well, this is what life was like for Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo is a three-time All-Star who helped lead the Cubs to the 2016 World Series (Florida shooting: Cubs' Anthony Rizzo sends support to his high school). Anthony Rizzo grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Right out of high school he got drafted onto the Salem Red Sox minor league team. He was then selected by the Boston Red Sox as a 6th draft pick in 2007 (Anthony’s Story). After that he was taken in by the Cubs as a starting first baseman and a cleanup hitter. The idea of the charity is to “help raise money for cancer research and treatment. The foundation also helps support the cancer patients families who are in need of guidance, reassurance, and reinforcement” ( ). Anthony says that after he found out he had cancer he knew he wanted to become a role model to help cancer patients and their families. Thus, in 2012, The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation began. It is a non- profit 501(c)(3) organization benefiting cancer research and the families fighting the disease. Rizzo donated $3.5 Million in donation from the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation to Lurie's Children Hospital; that is half of anthony Rizzo’s salary for 2017. Rizzo and his family have raised and donated millions of dollars to not only hospitals including Lurie’s Children Hospital but also to the families …show more content…

The award is named after Roberto Clemente after he died in a plane crash on his way to deliver goods to people in the Nicaragua earthquake. Rizzo has helped several families with their children's cancer battles. Yet at the same time he is still able to play professional baseball. Anthony is a fan favorite and a community favorite.
