The Flaming Dildos are a band searching for an identity. They want to be punk rockers, but don't know what that means. Rhea struggles with knowing when they will become “real.”“When does a fake Mohawk become a real Mohawk? Who decides? How do you know if it's happened?” (pg. 46)The girls constantly have this fear that they won't really embody their music or their Mohawks. They want to be this punk rock band that they’ve always imagined they would be. In their dreams, they have real Mohawks; but in real life they don't know how they would make them real. The phrase is a snarky remark to someone’s question. When someone asks you if you think you are real, you say “Ask me if I care.” Because you don’t care about being what you know you are. It is true that many times the phrase is used sarcastically, but the phrase still represents a disconnect from emotion towards something. During the story, the characters try too hard to be real. They want to have their dictionary definition be exactly what they want it to be, without realizing that they define themselves.What the characters never grasp is that to be real, you have to know you are.
