He did this art work on wet plaster so it is quite different than normal art work. The subject of this art is the school which refers to the Platonic Academy founded by Plato in Athens 387. I chose to write my art criticism on “The School of Athens” because as I flipped through the book it caught my attention. There are a few different shapes in the painting along the walls and floors, such as squares, triangles and circles. These shapes allow us to see how nicely built the school was. Throughout the painting lines are used to draw the viewer’s attention to different objects in the painting. We see continuous lines in the painting for example, at the top in the arch, the lines look as if they continue which makes us assume the figure continues. The colors that are used in the painting are very dark so that we do not pay too much attention to the colors but instead we look at the building itself. These elements are organized by balance, proportion, and unity. We see that the painting is unified because all of the different objects come together to create a bigger picture.
