Giovanni Paolo Pannini was born in 1691 in Piacenza, Italy, eventually Pannini moved to Rome, Italy where he lived the rest of his life until his death in 1765. In Pannini’s younger years he was aiming to have a career in the church and in this process he had learned about art and architecture and had a good understanding of it by the time he had gotten to Rome in 1711 where he continued his artistic training under Benedetto Luti. While in Rome he became influenced by the works of Giovanni Ghisolfi, Jan Frans van Bloemen, and Andrea Locatelli. While making a name for himself Pannini was nominated to the Accademia di San Luca, which was a school in Rome that was meant to take a good artist to the next level, in 1719 where he was a teacher. Peter’s Basilica, I believe, wasn’t intended to inform us of anything since it was commissioned by someone to be done. However, just by looking at the work gives you an idea of the architectural designs, the art that is within the building, and Pannini does a good job at capturing the magnificence of the church. Other pieces of art that Pannini is known for are his Interior of the Pathenon, Rome which is an oil on canvas piece that uses a manipulation of perspective to give a larger view of the interior.
