Art Analysis: SOTC By Kathleen Sherin

I chose the piece SOTC by Kathleen Sherin. This art piece is medium, which sort of allows me to view the details and authentically analyze the artwork. The painting currently goes for 500$ at The Print Club of Rochester 85th Annual Member’s Exhibit. It is an average painting that someone will hang in his or her house as decoration. It has a lot to do with lines and shapes, and colors. Cynthia Hawkins presented the first juror award to Kathleen. She was presented with this award for the way she composed her print, the implication of layers and the colors she used. Kathleen used analogous colors in her artwork. She used like blue and green color that are right next to each other on the color wheel, which are cool colors. It created a relaxing approach for when I looked at it. The painting also has lines going in different directions. Kathleen created an abstract art piece.

The shapes used in the painting are organic shapes. I say these are organic shapes because throughout the whole painting I see growth, like how I stated before in seeing an upside down person in a section of the painting. The primary visual elements of this painting are shape, line, and colors. I say that these are the elements because the art piece has many of these features in it. I see lines shapes that are used as objects, which are radically simplified and still recognized. For example the top part of the art piece has like a corner of a triangle that is seen as a table. Another visual element of this is the lines. The lines are going in many different directions that have me observing the paining. Some of the lines also seem symbolic or expressive to me because she has them bolded or in different colors. Color can be the most personal and deeply felt of elements in art. When it comes to the colors she used I can tell she was warm. She had the colors darkened in some parts of it and lightened in

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

My initial reaction upon looking over Turner’s “Slave Ship” was that it appeared to be a beautiful landscape. The way the sky looks over the ship and the horizon line is really striking and powerful. However, as you start to look down you start to see the reason for the name of “Slave Ship”. Along the bottom of the painting you can see body parts of humans in the water. There are hands and feet, the foot on the bottom right has a shackle still attached to the ankle and there appear to be fish eating at the body.…

Imagine a ceiling covered in Styrofoam cups assembled together so intricately and catching the light so meticulously that the material used looks far more advanced than an everyday manufactured item. Imagine a giant cube of toothpicks being held together by just the weight of the other surrounding toothpicks, causing it to be so fragile and vulnerable yet so sturdy at the same time. Imagine a plethora of metal Slinky’s intertwined and entangled in such a way it looks as though they are wrestling with themselves while still supporting the entirety of itself. Tara Donovan, an artist from the east coast, has spent the last two decades creating these structures and many like them.…

Through a contrast of colorful splatters and grey ones, she establishes her relationship with her surroundings. Having two separate parts is her way of showing us the two different cultures and geographic spaces that she has a relationship with, being Lebanon and the United States and she characterizes those with grey and yellow stains that symbolize urbanization and the chaos of the city. However, the two parts are related, when we combine them together, her brain is formed and from her brain, she diffuses art, being the colorful splatters of acrylic in the painting. Those colors are her art and her ideas which represent part of her identity and this shows that she also influences the world around her. She also shows that she is influenced by the spaces surrounding her by attributing the same colors to the inside of her brain as the ones that characterize the cities around…

The painting conveys how the crazy storm is approaching towards the nearby land. From this, people near the shore are running away. They are telling other people to watch out and run away from those big waves. People that are laying on top of the rocks were trying to be safe from the waves. Furthermore, it looks like towards the smaller rocks people were swept from the waves to the land.…

The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. Its size projects itself on the viewer overwhelming them with its color and size.…

I was fascinated to learn about the elements in Art. I had always thought that art had no organization, guidance or system. I thought that people just painted or drew pretty much whatever they wanted with no apparent rules. The Visual Elements that Getlein mentions on chapter 4 consist of the following; line shape and mass, light, color, texture and pattern and last but not least; time and motion (Getlein, 2012). These elements are intrinsically woven in art!…

Also, the mixture of warm colors on top combined with primary and secondary colors give the painting a delicate effect particularly the three green brush strokes as it adds even more mystery to the painting. Furthermore, the diagonal lines that shape the floor and the barriers of the bridge and the curved lines on the water make a combination of energy and endlessness at the same time because the side of where the scared looking person is, looks completely different from where the water, which is what perhaps reflects the degree of anxiety that the scared looking person was suffering in that particular…
