Friendship is needed in life. Without friendship or companionship no one would want to live. He states “For without friends no one would choose to live, though he had other goods; even rich men and those in possession of office and of dominating power are thought to need friends most of all”(Nicomachean Ethics, Book VIII, sec.1). Thus, while someone may be very successful and wealthy without friends they would not be able to live.
Friendships keep the young free from error, and aid the old. Friendship gets the young to join together and do “noble” acts. It tends to the elderly’s needs. It’s a type of love that tends to be shared by members of the same kind.
Even though justice is a collaboration of the virtues justice is not necessary in a friendship. But friendship is necessary in justice. Aristotle says that when people are considered friends then there would be no need for justice. “…while when they are just they need friendship as well, and the truest form of justice is thought to be a friendly quality.” (Nicomachean Ethics, Book VIII, sec.1).When people are just friendship is needed and when friendship is obtained justice is part.
Friendship is thought to be good, therefore it must be. Friendship inspires virtue. The main motive of a friendship is good. Friendship is good without qualification, meaning that friendship in of itself is good as it is. The main virtue in a friendship is to love rather than be
