In this essay, I will compare and contrast Cocking and Kennett’s view with Thomas’s highly moralized view about the nature and value of friendships. Friendship is an important aspect to human life, and many philosophers attempt to understand it to its fullest. To compare the differing views of Cocking and Kennett to Thomas’s Highly moralized view, I will examine why each party believes that friendship is valuable, as well as discuss how morality is related to friendship. Like previously mentioned, according to Thomas’s highly moralized view, friendship is valuable for the reasons that moral learning should come from it, and that friends should be a moral example for another. His reasoning for this comes from him saying that in a true friendship you are very close with your friend, and you would want them to be moral. Because of this., friends should not accept each other’s moral flaws, but should help them become morally better instead. People should also not support their friends in immoral endeavors. Cocking and Kennett disagree with them by saying that friendship is something that can lead us morally astray for its own sake and that it has little, if anything, to do with morality at all. They believe that friends often like each other for some of the little qualities that might be immoral. This shows that there can be a distinction made between a perfectly moral and a perfectly good friend. Thomas’s view and Cocking and Kennett’s view differ very much when it comes to the morality
