Because every individual views the world differently they choose to solve life problems differently. Every individual goes through a cognitive thought process when making decisions and depending on how an individuals choses to organize their thoughts about rules and laws can have a direct result in criminal or non-criminal behaviors. People who choose to use information properly can make reasoned judgments, however, some individuals tend to have cognitive defects and this causes them to misinterpret information that leads to poor decision making. Individuals who suffer with cognitive defects tend to lack any ability to empathize with other and are usually motivated by self-interest and self-gratification. These self interests tend to take precedence over societies social needs like obeying the law, because they do not see that what they are doing is wrong. The actions they make, though to them seem beneficial and satisfying they are often harmful to others. Errors in cognition in individuals can be traced back to childhood. As a child if not properly taught how to perceive and interpret information this can lead to violence becoming a stable behavior. Take for instance, a child who grew up with prolonged sexual abuse or physical abuse. This film portrayed a sickening tale of torture, rape, and brutality of three young woman for over a decade. The first of Ariel Castro’s victims was a single mother by the name of Michelle Knight she was only 21 at the time of the abduction when she agreed to accept a ride from Castro so she would not be late to a custody hearing to get her son back. Castro lured her to his house with the promise of a free puppy for her son. Then she was knocked out and suspended half-naked from the ground by wires. He began to break her by telling her nobody cares for her and nobody cares she’s missing. He would tell her he could do what he wants to her because he owned her. Castro would even have his family and friends over, and his band played at his house on many occations. When his children would come visit and would try and go upstairs or in the basement Castro would yell at them and threaten them. Knight attempted to escape numerous times without success. After many months of being in captive and chained to the floor Castro brought home another girl, who at the time was 14, and months later another girl who was only 17.
