Childhood/ Background
To begin, some background on Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer. According to biography.com, he was born on May 21, 1960 in West Allis, Wisconsin. He had a mother, father, and two younger brothers. While Dahmer was in elementary school, his mother became very ill, which affected Dahmer tremendously. He was known to be shy and very timid due to the neglect from both of his parents. He also didn’t have very many friends growing up. In addition, Dahmer became very intrigued by animals. He began collecting butterflies and other insects and put them into jars. From there, he advanced to animal carcasses. He would find animal carcasses on the side of the road and would take them home and dismember them. Later, he would store these dismembered animal parts in jars and keep them for his own pleasure. During his adolescent years, he was known to bring alcohol to school and keep it in his locker. He soon became an alcoholic. On the other side, he was known by his teachers to be a very intelligent student that got good grades. Next, he realized that he was homosexual, meaning that he liked the same sex as himself. At the age of sixteen, this became a problem. He started by fantasizing about other men, but soon it progressed. One day, he fantasized about a male jogger. He thought about him being unconscious and making sexual use out of his body. That day was the first day that he thought about attacking another individual. What he did: Next, Dahmer increased his fantasies tremendously. Everything began in the summer of 1978, when Dahmer claimed his first victim. According to biography.com, he picked up a hitchhiker named Steven Hicks. First, he got Hicks very drunk. Then, when Hicks attempted to leave, Dahmer hit him with a barbell and strangled him to death. He then started to dismember his body and packed it into plastics bags. He buried them behind his parents’ house. Later, he revisited the body and crushed the bones with a sledgehammer. By this time, Dahmer’s alcohol addiction had spun out of control. His father decided to make him enlist in the Army. He was in the Army for three years when he was kicked out for abusing alcohol. Soon after he returned home, he was arrested for disorderly conduct. His father was fed up with his behavior and sent him to his grandmother’s house. There, problems continued. He was arrested yet again for indecent exposure, meaning intentionally showing his genitals to the public. A couple years after that, he was arrested again. This time he was arrested for masturbating in front of two young boys. In 1978, when he got out of jail, he took his second victim. He, once again, got drunk with his victim, but this time it was in a hotel room. When Dahmer woke up, his victim was lying next to him dead. He had no memory of killing him and he didn’t care. He took his victim back to his grandmother’s house and dismembered him like he did with the rest. He began to masturbate on the corpse before getting rid of the remains. After he chose a victim, he would lure them home by using money or sex. Then, he would give them alcohol that was laced with drugs. After that, he strangled them to death. Next, he would do sexual acts towards the dead bodies before disposing them. Before disposing them, he dismembered the corpses and kept the genitals as souvenirs. He would take pictures of each stage of his murdering process to remind him of the thriving experience and to relive it. Eventually, he got caught again. This time he was charged with sexual exploitation and second degree sexual assault. He pleaded guilty and told the jury that he thought the boy looked older than he really was. After he was released years later, he went back to his old habits by taking 12 more lives.
