“Is marijuana harmful?” This is the question that fueled the advertisement that is fueling this paper. It is a question that has been the subject of many discussions and debates, and these have formed two major opinions about the use of marijuana. One party claims that the use of marijuana is harmful and is like any other drug. The other party claims the opposite. They state that due to its naturalism and calming effects, it can’t be harmful. These people would be considered middle to upper-class. In the 1960’s, marijuana carried this rebellious peace complex, in that while these users were promoting peace and smoking its herbal equivalent, they were in rebellion. This theme is still relevant in today’s society. However, this type of behavior would not be associated with such people as the medical professionals in the advertisement. Moreover, this is why there is such a shock factor in the depiction. So, now the question is, “Why is it seemingly acceptable for a teenager to smoke marijuana, but not for a doctor?” In the advertisement, it is not just a doctor smoking, but he is smoking as he about to perform a surgery. This changes the whole outlook on whether the use of marijuana can be harmful or not. The use of marijuana is usually known for only affecting the user. However, in the case of the advertisement, the doctor is affecting himself and the patient in an immense way.
