Adequate bathroom access for transgendered people in the United States.
Providing Evidence:
Currently in the United States there are only 12 states that are in full support of transgender bathroom access. There are 6 states that have semi support of the issue of transgender bathrooms. 8 states have claimed to have low support, of transgender bathroom rights, which leaves 24 states that are refusing to support transgender bathrooms. (Transgenderlawcenter, 2016, p.1). That is over 50% of the United States that are overlooking the rights of transgender people. There are cisgendered people that feel uncomfortable with the idea of sharing a bathroom with a transgendered individual. The other problem posed is that it would be a safety risk to allow transgender people into public restrooms. Both for the transgender person and the cisgender people involved. There have been cases of sexual assault, harassment, and mugging of the transgender person, but: “hundreds of cities, school districts, and 18 states already protect transgender people 's right to use restrooms, and none have seen a rise in incidents of people attacking anyone or of people pretending to be transgender in order to get access to restrooms” (Transequality, 2016, p.1). One that I am personally a member of is the I’ll Go With You movement. What this movement does is: “The #IllGoWithYou organizers have also created #IllGoWithYou buttons you can wear on a jacket or backpack to indicate publicly that you are willing to be tapped as a bathroom buddy” (Illgowithyou, 2016). What this then does is create a support system in public places, so even in unfriendly areas transgender people can still have some support.
