Trans Bathroom Law Research Paper

Recent in the news I have been hearing about the Trans Bathroom Law and it genuinely confuses me as to why it is such an issues. Why do people care so much about a stranger's genitals that would prompt them to make a law forcing them to use the incorrect bathroom? I am a transman living in Texas just trying to get by. This law affects me and people around me because I am a mostly passing man having to use the Women’s bathroom. I do not understand why forcing a trans person to use the wrong bathroom is more acceptable than having the decency to just let them use the restroom of gender they identify with. I want to understand why they do not want trans people using the right bathroom for them. I want to understand why they, the lawmakers and …show more content…
As Lee Kleinman said “Senate Bill 6 is defiantly an attack on our long-standing position against discrimination," (Widomski). Further in the article talks how about seventy seven percent of voters approved in an amendment that would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity and expression” to a list of employment protections (Wilonsky). At this point I was still confused about this law was even being carried out now since so many people voted but then I got to this quote from Dan Patrick saying "allowing men in women's restrooms is both mind-boggling and appalling." apparently after this him and republican Sen. Don Huffines launched a petition to “Keep Men Out Of Women’s Restroom.” this is when I started to see where the transphobia was coming from. All it took was one man who disagreed with anti-bias laws meant to protect minorities to snowball out of control to the point where he got what he wanted, a proposed piece of legislation saying “people must use the bathroom assigned to their "biological sex," which is to say the gender on their birth certificates.” it saddens me so much reading this articles know that it was just one person who put all of us, trans people of Texas, in such an awful situation. Moving onto Josh Kenworthy article I learned …show more content…
It wasn’t even from some adult acting out that caused Patrick to get this bill going, it was trans children. He wanted to target trans children to not only isolate and force them into situations nether they or the kids around them want to be in but to humiliate them; and for what? Why does this matter so much to him that feels the need to tweet "Mark today as the day that Texas is drawing a line in the sand," (Mangan). This bill will cost so much to Texas not only because of job loss but it’s speculated that “If Texas follows in North Carolina’s footsteps and becomes the second state to pass such a law, it could face similar economic fallout due to boycotts (“Around the States”). Not only this but taxpayer-funded schools or public agencies would have to pay ridiculous fines if they try to work around this bad by letting trans people use the right bathroom (“Around the States”). This bill will not only set Texas back years upon years of progress but will only solidify peoples beliefs that Texas is some backwards hick state that only cares about white cisgender heterosexuals who don’t want to step out of the 1950’s. Dan Patrick is making a mountain out of a nothing. There were no problems with trans people using the restroom until he came along and started making stuff up, I see that now. I thought

Nina Hernandez, in “Is the Trans Conversation Changing in Texas”, argues that there is an opportunity in Texas to raise awareness for the trans community. Hernandez supports this argument by first going into detail about the “state-sponsored bullying” that results from the Texas legislation requiring transgender individuals to use the bathroom corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate (Hernandez). The author then goes on to use the mayor of New Hope, Texas as an example of a possible win for the transgender community. Recently, in New Hope, Texas, Jess Herbst was chosen to fill the position of mayor, after the previous mayer died of a heart attack. In a “fearless open letter to the town’s residents”, Herbst told of her struggle…

Most bathroom bills that have recently been proposed aim to make sure trans people can only use public bathrooms that match the sex indicated in their birth certificate. This means that a trans woman who was born male will not be allowed to use a female bathroom in a mall or a restaurant. It might seem like too much trouble to go through in an effort to limit a trans person’s use of the bathroom, but…

The most severe of these bills is a bill from Florida “that would make it a misdemeanor for anyone to knowingly enter a bathroom that didn’t match the sex on their driver’s license or passport” (Steinmetz). This would affect numerous students and people in general who cannot change their gender on their official documents yet. One could get a misdemeanor just for using a public restroom facility. In addition to the Florida bill, “Republican state lawmakers are backing a bill that would require students in Kentucky to use the facilities that correspond to the sex listed on their birth certificate” and if this passes this means a student could sue for $2,500 if they encounter a student whose biological gender does not correspond with the restroom facility that they are using (Steinmetz). This is yet another bill that could fine a person, specifically students, for going to a restroom when students are the least likely to be able to change their gender on government…

Everyone who is not transgender and allowed to use the bathroom of their gender legally, is automatically privileged. Never will non-transgender individuals ever walk into the bathroom of their gender worrying about legality. Never will a non-transgender walk into a public bathroom and be judged, leered at, or observed with a careful eye. The New York Times editorial board article “Transgender Law Makes North Carolina Pioneer in Bigotry” writes, “By promoting the ludicrous idea that transgender women are inherently dangerous, the law endangers citizens who are already disproportionately vulnerable to violence and stigmatization.” According to this source, the law reinforces the narrative and oppression against transgender people.…

The article “Family Invites Paxton to Dinner to put a Face on Transgender Issues” discusses the experience the Briggle family faced after inviting the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over for dinner on Thursday, September 1st. The beginning of the article shared how Adam and Amber Briggle were nervous about having dinner with Paxton. This was because Adam and Amber have a transgender son and knew about Paxton’s recent decision to oppose the expansion of civil rights for gay and transgender people. Paxton opposing to expand civil rights for the gay and transgender population resulted in Adam and Amber to become concerned about their son’s safety when he goes to the bathroom at school. Inviting the Paxton family over for dinner was an act of diplomacy by the Briggle family and was a way for them to bond with the Paxton family; showing they are a family that cares deeply about the safe upbringing of their son in the Dallas-Fort community.…

This statement immediately shows Thiessen’s awareness of the problems that may be caused by biological men that use women’s restrooms or changing rooms. Thiessen argues that instead of the law allowing any person to enter the gendered-facility of his/her choice, public areas should provide access to single-room bathrooms or changing-rooms that are for transgendered people. This one-person room allows a person to use whichever facility that he/she identifies with, but it also protects women and children from being exposed to someone who falsely claims the identity of a transgender. Evaluation 1: This source is reliable because based from an American newspaper that is printed daily in Washington D.C.…

A law permitting transgenders to the bathroom could possibly allow predators to physically hurt boys and girls. But, this possibility is one which society can bear for “the sake of the greater good of human freedom” (Mill 43). Society must endure possible damage, for the sake of individual expression. There should instead be a law that punishes sexual predators for assaulting boys and girls in bathrooms. Rather than one that bans transgenders from entering bathrooms they feel comfortable with, from fear of possible sexual…

House Bill 2 was a law passed that bans citizens of North Carolina from using public bathrooms that do not match the sex on their birth certificate. The law went into effect eleven hours after being signed by Governor Pat McCrory, with no public input. Many people were affected throughout the United States due to this decision. This law is unfair to the LGBT community. Although, there are five different parts to HB2, my main focus is on part one which deals with bathroom usage based on biological sex.…

The transgender community has been constantly fighting for equal rights. The Texas Senate is making their fight for equal rights more challenging by passing the anti-transgender bathroom bill. The anti-transgender bathroom bill contributes to the stigmatization and marginalization of a group that already faces significant discrimination. A study was done on people who identify as transgender in the Texas area. They found that 28% of respondents reported they were denied access to a restroom.…

I will admit that my mindset is not always the most open on certain issues, but I will say that I am a proponent of freedom. I may ever need to get an abortion, but I respect the right of a person to get one; I may never be a homosexual man, but I do not give a damn, frankly, if they want to be able to get married and be miserable like the rest of us (I kid, I kid); And I may never be transgender, but I do not care where they use the restroom, or if a female who identifies as male uses the mens room (the article specifies how the issue only seems to care about transgender men using the rest room, so this is my counter perspective), it probably is just going to…

As well as forces people to understand that people are looked at differently because of who they are.
