Nina Hernandez, in “Is the Trans Conversation Changing in Texas”, argues that there is an opportunity in Texas to raise awareness for the trans community. Hernandez supports this argument by first going into detail about the “state-sponsored bullying” that results from the Texas legislation requiring transgender individuals to use the bathroom corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate (Hernandez). The author then goes on to use the mayor of New Hope, Texas as an example of a possible win for the transgender community. Recently, in New Hope, Texas, Jess Herbst was chosen to fill the position of mayor, after the previous mayer died of a heart attack. In a “fearless open letter to the town’s residents”, Herbst told of her struggle…

With the increasing popularity of the debate over transgenders and the public bathroom, the transgender movement has started to push not only for bathroom rights but anti-discrimination laws as well. The two sides of this, now growing debate, is that transgenders are humans and deserve basic human right, as well as, that just like the LGBT movement gained laws to protect their rights, i.e. marriage and protection from employment discrimination, the trans gender movement should be granted the same rights. Where as, the other side is that the transgender movement does not need extra laws protecting them from discrimination and laws giving them rights because they are not deprived of actual human rights because they are allowed access to the bathroom,…

If the government does not openly identify the transgender community and their movement, then the rest of society will not take the transgender community’s plead for non- discriminatory laws as seriously and not support their cause. Therefore, people need to recognize the severity of what transgender men and women face on the day to day basis; They face getting bullying, beat up, sometimes killed for being who they truly are or they face unemployment, poverty, even jail time too, simply because they identify as another gender than what they were biologically. This sort of discrimination has been fought by several other minority groups, such as, African Americans, Asian, and any other non- White races, even women and gays have faced this discrimination and received laws to protect their rights from being taken…
