Are We Created Equally? “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (US 1776). We were told from a very young age that we could be anything we wanted. We could charm the world being princes and princesses. We could fly to new heights, literally and metaphorically being astronauts or being the President of the United States. We were told a lot of things growing up and perhaps one of the most important things was to work hard and stay in school. After we finished school then college was the next step in fighting for a chance to impact the world and for us to achieve our childhood dreams. I was told the most important goal to have while growing through the decades was happiness and the ability to communicate and express yourself in whichever way fit best. “It is so liberating to really know what I want, what truly makes me happy, what I will not tolerate. I have learned that it is no one else’s job to take care of me but me” (Beyoncé Knowles). I find happiness in literacy which is defined by myself as a form of expression to effectively connect with another human or broad audience. I realized this as I was growing through high school and was forced to translate my ideas to the paper or computer screen in front of me, but I began to realize another thing.
