Anthem Essay The people in anthem were not allowed to be individuals. They never used the word I and always used the word we because they didn’t know what an individual was. What’s more important, the individual or the group? The individual is more important than the group. The individual is more important because being an individual makes people happy, they can act for themselves, and they can have an opinion if they are an individual. The first reason why the individual is definitely more important is because focusing on an individual makes them happy. When Equality first discovers the word I, page 94, he finally knows how it feels to be an individual instead of thinking as a group. He discovers that they don’t have a control over him

In the community you are not allowed to have an opinion. You do what you are told to do by the government. If you didn’t agree with them and did something that they didn’t agree with then you would get punished. “We have seen one of such men burned alive in the square of the City. And it was a sight which has stayed with us through the years.” (pg 49-50) The community is all about being equal and have people be as alike as possible. They don’t get to have opinions and they must all agree with one another or the government. “And as we all undress at night, in the dim light of the candles, our brothers are silent, for they dare not speak the thoughts of their minds. For all must agree with all, and they cannot know if their thoughts are the thoughts of all, and to they fear to speak.” (pg 47) Also they have no choice of what they do with their life. When it is time for them to work, they get careers picked for them even though they may hate the job they get. All in all, the individual is greater than the group because being an individual make people happy, they can act for themselves, and they can have their own opinion. Being an individual is definitely a better choice than being in a group. Once Equality turned into an individual you could see a difference in him. He was confident, happy, and fearless.
