Imagine looking at a mirror and seeing nothing but a blank gray image;there is no character and no difference from one person from the next. From several works of art, individuals form their identity and gained control of themselves. Equality, the triumphant of the dystopian novel, Anthem, escapes his collectivist society and becomes the king of his own mind and body. Ayn Rand, the author of this novel, details how Equality overcomes the regime and forms his own identity. Similarly, the children from the article, “Don’t! The secret of self-control” by Jonah Lehrer, realize how decisions from the past can influence them in the future. It is something that gradually forms shape as that person grows and matures. Mario, who suffers from severe OCD, is restricted by his inhibitions, but he grows as a person through his surgery. Now energized and invigorated, “Mario went home, He wanted to talk, He wanted to do things” (Slater 8). Previously, Mario was very lethargic because combating his OCD took everything from him. By taking advantage of a golden opportunity he can finally live his life the way he wants to. Coincidentally, as the children from the marshmallow experiment mature into adults they develop their own individual character traits. It is reported, “from their capacity to plan and think ahead to their ability to cope well with problems” (Lehrer 2). The children have made choices in their lives that show what type of person they are. It is the power of will and self-control that factors their decision making process. Just like the children and Mario, Equality grows into his identity. His journey culminated into becoming an individual and even wanting to battle his society. He boldly proclaims, “For the coming of that day I shall fight” (Rand 104). Since, Equality is now independent, his character grows and his traits of leadership begin to show.
