Equality 7-Anthem Analysis

For Equality 7-2521 to have freed himself from collectivism, he must overcome many obstacles. Anthem is a dystopia about a person named Equality 7-2521 who lives in a place where “I” is gone and “we” has taken over. The thought of one is punishable by death in their world. While the passage “The Soul of an Individual” talks about how people fear change and act against it. In the book Equality had struggled to win, but had done so at the end. Equality 7-2521 finds a way free himself from collectivism, what makes this possible is taking risks, hard work, and thinking for himself.
Something that helped Equality 7-2521 is his will to take risks. The book states “We shall not report our find to the City Council. We shall not report it to any man”(Rand, 33). By refusing to tell the City Council Equality 7-2521 put himself in danger and at risk of death if he was caught. In the book Equality 7-2521 starts to think for himself when he was in the home of infants (Rand, 20). If he was not able to think for himself, he would not have studied in the cave, he would have just told the council like International 4-8818 said to. The book also states “We, Equality 7-2521, HAVE discovered a new power of nature. And we have discovered it alone, and we are alone to know it.” (Rand, 52). This shows that Equality 7-2521 must think of this by himself and test it until he reached this final conclusion. The Soul of an Individual state “Every creative job is achieved under the guidance of a single individual thought.” (Rand, 2). In other words if Equality 7-2521 had not thought for himself, he couldn’t have freed himself from collectivism he would not have been curious to study items such as how an animal moves or what caused the frogs dead body to
