Over 26 billion animals are used every year for animal testing (Animal Testing). Some would argue that animal testing is helpful to the human life because we have found a lot about what the body looks like inside and how it works. Also, we have found many vaccines against harmful diseases. Woods research states “animal testing has been around for over 2,000 years” (9). Alcmaeno, a Greek scientist in 500 BC found about how eye sight works. Erasistrtus, an Egyptian scientist in 300BC found out many things to do with the human heart (Wood 8). In the 19th century, Louis Pasteur grew deadly germs for anthrax and made a vaccine by using the weakened cells. He used animals to test this vaccine and it tested positive. The history of animal testing is lengthy, but one thing has not changed, the use of animal testing is cruel and inhuman. Animal testing is not only done to find vaccines but many cosmetic companies use animal testing to test out how their products will work and react with humans. This is harmful because many younger teens and elder people use cosmetics daily and you can’t always trust the results you get from animal testing. Animal testing has many negative effects and alternatives should be investigated for a variety of reasons. Many people oppose this and think that animal testing is a positive thing for everyone.
