Causes Of Animal Extinction

Decent Essays
The second leading cause of animal extinction is over hunting. Many animals have a ban of being hunted in effort to preserve their dying species; however, the ban on these species does not stop some poachers from killing the animals for money. Some examples of animals with a hunting ban are lions, African elephants, and the wart hog. People chose to hunt animals for different reasons like food and trophy hunting, but not all hunting is bad for animal population. For example, deer hunting is a major help to keep the population of deer to a controllable rate. Most of the animals being hunted for money however are not hunted for food or over population. People hunt animals such as tigers to sell their pelts on the black market for large amounts …show more content…
How can we stop the ever growing number of animals we are losing? Well the simplest answer is to protect the environment and keep in mind the consequences of the decisions made when it comes to the earth. Remember people share the earth with animals and it is big enough for both of us. Stop hunting animals for money when there is a limited number in the population already. Another big factor that could help with the problem of extinction is to help breeding. Many programs are specifically made to help animals breed to try and replenish the population of their species. For example, the number of bald eagles has steadily begun to grow with the aid of programs like this. What these programs do is taking a number of the species in need and breed them with the goal of releasing a larger number of animals back into the wild to live healthily and continue the growing …show more content…
A book called Cloning Wild Life: Zoos, Captivity, and the Future of Endangered Animals written by Carrie Friese, an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science states, “In November 2000 a cloned, endangered bovine was born on an industrial sized farm in Iowa. Named “Noah,” this gaur was created through an interspecies modification in the somatic cellnuclear transfer process, or what is more popular referred to as cloning” (Friese). Friese’s studies focuses mainly on genetic sciences in social life, which includes humans and animal species. Her book explores the possibilities of using animal cloning to regenerate the population of endangered species in the world. The idea of cloning is still not perfected and is currently being perfected by scientists. The most well-known case of cloning is the more recent clone Dolly the sheep. She was cloned in 1996 and lived until 2003. Everything went well in the cloning process except when Dolly was cloned from an adult sheep she took on the age of the original organism. She was cloned a baby but was really an adult sheep in age. Cloning is far from perfect but with everyday great advances are made in the steps toward being able to use cloning to bring the population of endangered animals up to sustainable

“20 Years after Dolly the Sheep, Questions Remain about Cloning” On July 5th 1996 the very first cloned mammal was born Blackface Sheep 6ll3 or Dolly was created by the Roslin Institute in Scotland Dolly was brought into existence using the process of somatic cell nuclear transfer Somatic cell nuclear transfer is when the nucleus which contains most of the genetic information in a cell is taken from a cell in the mammary gland of an adult animal. Then the nucleus of an unfertilized egg is removed and then replaced with the nucleus from the mammary gland. The egg was stimulated to develop into an embryo which was then implanted into the mother. This was a major breakthrough because previously cloning was only considered to be possible with the use of embryonic cells, but they had just proved that you could successfully use cells from the adult body to clone…

Most of the animals that are hunted in Africa are either endangered, vulnerable, or threatened, meaning if these creatures continue to be hunted, they will quickly become extinct. Scientists devote their studies to these creatures and tourists spend money to visit the beloved animals. Trophy hunting not only slaughters innocent creatures, but it shatters hearts around the world.…

Cloning is a controversial topic which lies in the morals of the people, the decision to make a mini replica of a preexisting thing in a lab causes a range of reactions. Cloning is considered a type of asexual reproduction, which consists of reproducing DNA. My fascination with human cloning started in sixth grade because of a Novel by Nancy Farmer called The House of the Scorpion, the story is about a young boy who was isolated much of his younger life by a drug lord which is the original copy of the young boy. Matteo the original is over 200 years old because he discovered a way to keep producing clones of himself that provide him with organs and body parts to live forever. The series goes on with the original Matteo dying and by law the clone can inherit the empire of the original, but Matteo is still a copy of the original which means his life is built for destruction and pain.…

The cause of over-hunting or under-hunting an area greatly affects all the populations including humans. For example, if you don 't kill enough elk one year, the farmers of grass-like plants will lose crops to the large animals and therefore, lose money and time. Elk also damage fences and building structures during runting season. Elk are smart and will get into barns, eating hay stored for horses and cows for the winter months. They are a nuisance, but especially if there are too many in one area.…

Natural selection is when a species or individual with unfavorable traits is killed off. When this occurs, it is sometimes unfavorable to the world’s ecosystem, so humans are trying to save all of the species they can. One of the methods that they have employed is making a list of all of the animals that they deem “endangered” and ranking them based on how many individuals in a certain species are left in the wild and in captivity. Another method that humans have developed is imposing limits on which animals can and can’t be hunted at certain times of the year. This also sometimes means that if there is overpopulation then a reward will be offered for any corpses that are recovered legally and turned in to the proper authorities.…

Wildlife poaching has negative effects on local communities, wildlife population, and the ecosystem. The extinction of a species can effect a local communities tourism industry. “A community that relies on its wildlife to attract tourists is at great risk for economic hardship if the prevalence of poaching is high”(Estrada). If Poaching continues still on it can have a drastic effect on the food chain. For example, “when the North American Gray Wolf was on the brink of extinction, due to trophy hunting and poaching, the elk populations in Yellowstone National Park soared.…

When the sheep Dolly was born, cloning turned from a Science Fiction to a reality humans have to deal with on so many levels. Cloning to bring back distinct animals, create a new breads and for humans cloning either to produce children for people who can’t have them, to avoid DNA related diseases, to produce organs for sick people who need them, to get a fresh new clone of a lost loved ones or even create super humans. All that has raised a lot of talk among the public. Since Day one, cloning has been tagged with playing the role of “GOD”, and when that happens, first questions rushed to all our minds are; how Ethical/ Unethical would that be? And how safe is it for all the parties involved?…

In the article Bringing Them Back to Life by Carl Zimmer, scientists are debating on whether they should bring back extinct animals or not. Some say that it would be cool to actually “de-extinct” an animal, but is it really worth the time and money to do so? Cloning can involve several different processes such as injecting nuclei into other animal cells, restructuring genomes and reprogramming cells. Bringing back or cloning animals from the past would be great scientific achievement but then again the past is the past and should maybe left that way. There is great debate of de-extinction; the pros of scientific advancement and preservation or the cons of playing God and wasting money.…
