Causes Of Animal Extinction

The second leading cause of animal extinction is over hunting. Many animals have a ban of being hunted in effort to preserve their dying species; however, the ban on these species does not stop some poachers from killing the animals for money. Some examples of animals with a hunting ban are lions, African elephants, and the wart hog. People chose to hunt animals for different reasons like food and trophy hunting, but not all hunting is bad for animal population. For example, deer hunting is a major help to keep the population of deer to a controllable rate. Most of the animals being hunted for money however are not hunted for food or over population. How can we stop the ever growing number of animals we are losing? Well the simplest answer is to protect the environment and keep in mind the consequences of the decisions made when it comes to the earth. Remember people share the earth with animals and it is big enough for both of us. Stop hunting animals for money when there is a limited number in the population already. Another big factor that could help with the problem of extinction is to help breeding. Many programs are specifically made to help animals breed to try and replenish the population of their species. For example, the number of bald eagles has steadily begun to grow with the aid of programs like this. A book called Cloning Wild Life: Zoos, Captivity, and the Future of Endangered Animals written by Carrie Friese, an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science states, “In November 2000 a cloned, endangered bovine was born on an industrial sized farm in Iowa. Named “Noah,” this gaur was created through an interspecies modification in the somatic cellnuclear transfer process, or what is more popular referred to as cloning” (Friese). Friese’s studies focuses mainly on genetic sciences in social life, which includes humans and animal species. Her book explores the possibilities of using animal cloning to regenerate the population of endangered species in the world. The idea of cloning is still not perfected and is currently being perfected by scientists. The most well-known case of cloning is the more recent clone Dolly the sheep. She was cloned in 1996 and lived until 2003. Everything went well in the cloning process except when Dolly was cloned from an adult sheep she took on the age of the original organism. She was cloned a baby but was really an adult sheep in age. Cloning is far from perfect but with everyday great advances are made in the steps toward being able to use cloning to bring the population of endangered animals up to sustainable
