The relationship between humans and animals has always come into question, especially since human beings seat at the top of the food chain. Aided by advanced weapons and technology, humans can subdue or hurt any animal, which has also classified humans as the most dangerous of the animal kingdom. Since before civilization people have killed animals for food and fur or clothing; modern times have seen humans use animals for experiments, for entertainment such as in zoos, and as pets for companionship (Armstrong & Botzler, 2016). In this manner, society determines what rights are and how they apply to people. However, when addressing the relationship between humans and animals, the primary concern is whether to consider animals as beings that can have rights, especially those that are reared by humans (Angelia, 2017). While some schools of thought consider animals to be sentient beings, therefore, they have rights that ought to be respected even by humans, some continue to argue otherwise. If society or the majority determines rights then what happens to animals is left in the hands of people (Angelia, 2017). A specific community may decide that the animals they use for many purposes including food and fur among others do not have rights, which leaves them vulnerable. On the other hand, a community that decides to protect animals rights may choose to define tough measures against those that violate those rights.
