The Greeks have contributed many facts and inventions that have influenced our modern society. It is believed that the first Ancient Greek civilizations were formed nearly 4,000 years ago (1600 BC). These early civilizations were formed by the strong Mycenaeans of Crete, a Greek Island. The ancient Greeks contributed to many aspects of our modern civilization, including theatre, architecture, politics, literature, and sciences. The Greeks made lots of stories to help them learn about their world. The gods and monsters were mentioned very often in these stories. Gods mentioned in the stories often had statues carved of themselves which were later put into temples. The Greeks also invented the theatre. They loved to watch plays and most cities had a theatre. One of the most well known contributions the Greeks made were the Olympics. The Ancient Greeks held many festivals in honour of their gods. To celebrate the god Zeus, the first Greek Olympics were held in the city of Olympia in 776 BC. The city-states were often at war, but just before the Olympics a truce was called so everyone could travel to Olympia safely. The events at the Greek Olympics included wrestling, boxing, long jump, javelin, discus, and chariot racing. In wrestling, the contestants had to be the toughest and there were few rules. Most of the contestants competed naked. The winner of the events were given a wreath made of leaves and, once they came home, would receive free meals and the best seats in the theatre. Initially, the games were just short foot races whose main purpose was to keep Greek men fit for times of war. The track for the foot races was about 700
