Olympia was a popular worship location in western Peloponnese. The major god who was worshipped here was Zeus, but other deities such as Hera and Aphrodite were worshipped here as well. Many structures including temples were built over the course of several hundred years at the site containing statues such as one of Zeus sitting upon a throne. Eventually, the first of many Olympic games took place here, in dedication to the gods, in 776 BCE. The first Olympic game was a simple foot race with other sporting events added later. Thousands of people traveled to participate in or watch the Olympics, and they brought offerings such as money and weaponry for Zeus.
