The movie I chose to watch is UP directed by Pete Docter and with music composed by Michael Giacchino. UP is based on an elderly man trying to fulfill his and his late wife’s dream but stumbles upon an unlikely young companion along with animal friends throughout his journey. Throughout the film, the music score can either be taken as conventional or cliché. Throughout the film the leitmotif of the waltz melody is played anytime Ellie is brought up or the house is thought of in a greater sense. The leitmotif also relates to the romance Ellie and Carl share, but also Carl’s emotion of loneliness. For the most part, the score was conventional. There were no over the top orchestrations that the composer used. Giacchino kept the score subtle and light. Giacchino uses certain types of orchestration to demonstrate the emotion the audience should feel. Giacchino uses strings to associate the romance of Carl and Ellie, woodwinds for a dreamy sort of feel, or the use of low woodwinds or brass to create a sad
