“Hold fast to dreams, for if dream dies, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly” (Langston Hughes). The film “Of Mice and Men” directed by Gary Sinise is an adaption of the novel with the same name written by John Steinbeck, it depict the icon living conditions and life style of itinerant farm workers in California during the Great Depression. Both the novel and the film develop the themes of “friendship,” “loneliness,” and “loss of dreams” and use the actions of the characters to portray these themes through different methods. First of all, the theme of friendship is developed through the main character of George Milton. In the film, George displays tenderness when he gently cleans the blood from Lennie’s face after Curley attacks…

The movie To Kill a Mockingbird, based on the novel written by Harper Lee showed the life of a child during the Great Depression and captured the theme of innocence taken away by evil. In most cases the book is always better than the film because life lessons are taken away in greater detail and are much easier to apply to a reader's life. Many movies stray from the book as did To Kill a Mockingbird, but also captured the scenes not shown in the book. Unlike the book, the movie had taken away the relationship that Boo Radley had with the children. One part of the book which was not shown in the movie was Mrs. Maudie's house fire when Boo Radley had draped a blanket over Scout’s shoulders while Jem and Scout were standing in the cold.…

Appearances can often be deceiving, as often times in today’s judgemental society people hide who they are to avoid judgement. In many classic American novels, the characters do the same. In John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men, Lennie appears very much a classic “tough guy.” In Ernest Hemingway 's The Old Man and The Sea, Santiago is viewed as being dangerously unlucky, as well as strange. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby seems to the public the picture of success and happiness.…

The overall story remains quite similar , however, some important features that fans of the novel may have been eager to see, are evidently missing. The pear tree in the novel is what drives Janie to find love. In the film, the tree is replaced with a pond. She submerges herself in clear water several times, marking new beginnings in her life. Racism was also a major topic in the novel, but the film neglects to mention the theme.…

All great novels have conflicts in them; John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is no exception to this. Steinbeck’s main character, George, faces many different problems throughout the story. Some of George’s conflicts are internal, while others are external. Although George faces many struggles he always seems to be able to think of a solution. George’s struggles, whether internal or external, are problems none of us would ever imagine.…

The reason I enjoyed Of Mice and Men was for the reason that its plot and prose are straightforward and unadorned, but the impact of the final chapters is unforgettable. Also its themes continue to be relevant to 21st Century society. It reads rather quickly, and it took me less than a couple of days to complete. It is only six chapters long and about one hundred and eighty six pages Additionally, Lennie and George are iconic characters, and Steinbeck 's presentation of their interfaces with the hands at the Salinas ranch is pitch-perfect. Similar to any other novel, Of Mice and Men also has imperfections that as a reader, a negative aspect about the novel is the belligerent language.…

“An’ why? Because….because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why” (Steinbeck 14). In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, he portrays a story of a mentally handicapped man born in the wrong generation. The novel shows many differences between mentally handicapped Lennie and his best friend, with full mental capacity, George. Although George and Lennie have countless differences and play contrasting roles, they are alike in several ways. The way the story is written, it would not have been the same without Lennie’s character not having a mental illness.…

Overall, the movie, Of Mice and Men, was significantly accurate and precise in the portraying of the book. This movie, directed by Gary Sinise in 1992, takes place mainly in Soledad, California where Lennie and George struggle to survive. The setting of the story takes place in the 1930’s, which is clearly depicted within the movie, especially how much different society was compared to today. However, the actors did not come up to par with expectations of the novel. Out-of-date film techniques were wisefully used to make key scenes in the film appear more dramatic.…
