Also, the audio of the toad and Pale Man scenes help intensify the story. The audio elements accentuate the monstrous characteristics. When Ofelia enters the tree, she is breathing heavily. There are ambient noises from the bugs on the frog’s skin (Del Toro). Also, there is ambient noise at the beginning of the Pale Man scene. When Ofelia walks, her shoes hit the floor. In the distant, babies scream as the portraits of slaughtered children are shown. The cracking of firewood is audible when the piles of shoes are in the frame. Altogether, these noises elevate tension and suspense. There are sound effects to the Pale Man lifting his hands and placing the eyeballs into the sockets on his palms. These sound effects help announce his awakening. As soon as Ofelia spots the grapes that she is not supposed to eat, a piece of music with a warning tone plays. Sound works with the visuals to further describe and explain a scene.

As a result of these internal and external conflicts, Ofelia is forced to leave a world full of hate and violence for a world of acceptance and glory. The rhetorical message evaluates how monsters present conflicts. The monstrous in Ofelia’s world harm her character. Del Toro’s visual and oral conventions help identify what constitutes in something being monstrous and the horrid effects its presence can have in an innocent environment. Vidal’s character suggests a possibility that when an individual lacks humanity and stability, they too can become monstrous.
