"Janie saw her life like a great tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things done and undone. Dawn and doom was in the branches" (8). When Janie was 16 her nanny seen her kissing Johnny Taylor. Then Nanny says that she 's already a woman. In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” Janie Mae Crawford, who is the main character goes through three different relationships. She also learns some very, very valuable lessons about marriage, integrity, love, and happiness from her relationships specifically with Logan Killicks and Tea Cake.
Janie was forced to marry Logan Killicks by Nanny, her grandmother. She wanted her to get married soon because she was worried that Janie would become “loose” and not be respected by society. “Tain’t Logan Killicks Ah wants you to have, baby, it’s protection. Ah ain’t gittin’ ole, honey, Ah’m done ole. One mornin’ soon, now, de angel wid de sword is gointuh stop by here. De day and de hour is hid from me, but it won’t be long. Ah as de Lawd when you was uh infant in mah arms to let me stay here till you got grown. He done spared me to see de day. Mah daily prayer now is tuh let dese golden moments rolls on a few days longer till Ah see you safe in life” (15). What This shows is that Nanny is getting old and Nanny wants Janie to be married. Because Nanny is old, her priority is for Janie to find a good husband for her so he can take care of her, so she wants to marry Janie to Logan Killicks.…
