Janie Christ Figure

1. Is Janie or Tea Cake a Christ figure? Choose one and argue for or against this, providing details from the novel to support your answer. Overall in my opinion I think Tea Cake was the Christ figure. He portrayed these characteristic by a lot of things. Tea Cake was the type of person to be trusted by Janie even when the odds were against him, he would never do anything to damage his love for Janie. Tea Cake was a mysterious character and in times it was hard to stay faithful to him for example, him leaving after the wedding Janie had to be faithful and trust that he would return to her; this can relate to the followers of Christ putting all faith and trust in him that he was teaching them the ways of everlasting life. There was difficulties thrown at Janie throughout her life that kept her from achieving her true goal to be loved for who she is. We see that Janie finds herself unhappy when with Jody because he keeps her from things in her everyday life that she wants to be a part of and makes her something she is not. During this time we see Janie desperate to be let free from the restraints Jody has on her. She does not get this freedom until the death of Jody, now she feels unimpeded of any obstructions from her dreams. Then she meets Tea Cake with him she can be the person she wants to be and feels a true love for him. Tea Cake lets her live the life she wants to while loving her for who she is. The trust and bond that Tea Cake and Janie have for each other is what Janie has been searching for. Janie describes to Pheoby that she truly think she had found the man she wanted all along in life. Janie comes back to Eatonville content and happy with the way her life had gone. Tea Cake gave her the better life she searched for and until then was never truly
