Holden Caulfield Monologue

When I first saw him, I was shocked. He sat there, smiling and crying while the rain fell. His eyes stayed on the little girl riding the carousel, probably his sister.

I could see what my brother saw in him. He was cute in a plain kind of way. Short brown hair peeking out under his weird hat, sparkling hazel eyes, and a smile that could rival Frank Sinatra’s.

“He has the best smile Mary.”

As I walked up to him, I noticed worry lines permeate his face. His sparkling eyes contained a sense of reverence, most likely for the girl, but also some seriousness. Holden Caulfield appeared to have made some big decision and this was not the way I had first heard about him.

I looked at James. He

What do I do?”

“Trust someone,” I grab his face and stare into his hazel eyes, hoping my message will get through. “Get help Holden. You’re not alone. This is common. Find someone, a professional and get help. Connect with them. You have the potential to live a beautiful life. To have a beautiful future. Don’t get stuck in the past. Let time guide you. Not control you.”

His eyes go past mine and I turn to see his little sister on the carousel, waving at us. We both wave back and I know the very first person that Holden will go to.

“Trust her Holden,” I point to the girl on the carousel. “Get a professional, but trust her. Promise me. Promise me you’ll get help!”

Now his eyes bore into mine. For the first time since I introduced myself, he smiled. That beautiful smile that seemed to reflect sunshine. “I will sport, I will.”
I roll my eyes and let go of his hand and chin. I lean down to ruffle his hair and turn around to walk away. I resist the urge to look at him over my shoulder and know that James would be proud. I hope Holden will turn out okay.

“He’s special Mary. The most special person you’ll ever

In the first paragraph of The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield addresses his nominal audience in two distinct idioms. At first he is truculent and defensive, using slang like “lousy” and “crap” and employing long, rambling sentences as he tells his listener what he won’t be talking about; his “whole goddam autobiography.” However, towards the end of the paragraph his defensive language drops and he speaks in more precise sentences as he shares a literary interest; a “terrific book of short stories” written by his brother, and provides a brief description of his favourite story. Salinger use’s these two narrative voices throughout the novel, and in this paper I will examine how they contribute to the meanings and effects of the text. The…
