Andy Dufrense is sent to prison in the beginning of the movie for murdering his wife and her lover, even though he is innocent. He arrives at the prison and is quick to get into Red’s gang. Red is known for smuggling things into the prison or as ‘the guy who can get things’. Early in the movie Andy gets a rock hammer and a poster of Rita Hayworth. Those things become very important later on in the movie.
In Andy’s first year of prison he is regularly assaulted and raped by a gang called The Sisters and their leader Bogs. He does not complain but tries to inhibit them and is happy when he gets a job license-plating the roof. I feel that that is completley true becuase this is a touching, hopeful and elysian movie who makes you really feel things. It is also full of a scenes so full of irony it makes you giggle which balances with the seriousness that follows. Morgan Freeman’s voiceover really sets the feeling and his voice if perfect. The script is written in an artistic way and makes you think so it is not one of those cliché movies where you don’t even remember what you were watching.
