Summary:
A summarization of Cool Hand Look can easily begin with a man who has a drinking problem sent to a prison camp, known as the “chain gang”, because of vandalizing government property. He also manages to accomplish this all while under the influence, as well as attempting to take the fallen change out of the dissembled parking meters. Throughout his stay in the camp, he seems to “play the game” and attempts to fit in by trading, gambling, and planning his escape. Throughout his sentence he is caught numerous times in the act of his plans, causing him to face many trips to “the hole”, an isolation box used for punishment. The movie ends with his two final attempts at escape, the first resulting in him being addressed by digging his own grave in absence, and the last with him being executed. A summarization of the second film, Shawshank Redemption, can be explained in a more terrifying manner by the main character, Andy, being seized to prison. After just one night, the prison is filled with tears after a new inmate is brutally beaten to death. Throughout each scene one can recognize that Andy refuses to stay in this environment, and does plan to escape. With success of this escape, he then moves to Mexico where he begins a new chapter in his life. The film then goes on to introduce the viewers to Red, who is known to be the only one there that has in fact commuted murder. Closer to the end of the film the warden commits suicide in attempt to escape his arrest caused by Andy. After being exposed to their wrongs the prison is taken over by a new owner, awarding Red a chance at freedom. The appearance of God in ‘‘Cool Hand Luke’’ can be seen as a major similarity between the two films, and is seen a lot more then one would think. A major example of this could be taken from the scene in which Luke ate fifty hard-boiled eggs in an hour; at the end of the scene Puget Sound University notes that “at the end of the egg-eating, the convicts have been captivated and Luke is left smiling in a crucifixion pose”. He then, as a last reach for God, does the unthinkable once more, and attempts to escape. As a final similarity to take into consideration one can discover that each of the character both have this “failure to communicate” within their stay. An example of this can be seen in Cool Hand Luke where he is very determined to escape; this is seen in Andy as well. They also each have these problems of communication with each of their wardens. Luke having the main issue of having a bad attitude resulting in punishment, and Andy also having this problem. This could possibly be their fascinating desire to reach freedom. However, this leads us to a major difference of how they got to
