‘We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place, we stay there, even though we go away.’ This something mentioned in the quote can be anything; a memory left on the minds of close friends, one’s diary or notes that shows his thoughts and more. In the film “Night Train to Lisbon” a 2013 movie directed by Bille August, the main character, Raimund, decides to track down the life of another main character, Amadeu, after encountering a book that Amadeu wrote. As a professor of anicient languages who spent his whole life studying about the relationship between language and philosophy, Raimund regards writing as a matter of existence. He tries to discover the truth between the ego that one perceives of himself and the ego that others find inside him, the difference between what one says about himself and what others say about him, and the life that one lives in the present and life that one …show more content…
For instance, same scene is shown several times from different characters’ perspectives. The scene when Amadeu and Jorge meets for the first time after Amadeu saved Mandes, the secret police, is shown four times throughout the running time.. The first time this part of the story is shown, it is presented from the viewpoint of Jorge who thinks that Amadeu is not trustworthy, and perhaps a betrayer. However, when this scene is shown from the perspective of Amadeu, which is located at the last few minutes of the movie, the audience can understand that Amadeu saved Mandes to reponsibly carry out his duty as a doctor. Also, he wanted Mandes to be in debt so that the Resistance could get help from their enemies at times of emergency.
