Background of author
Dom Joly wrote the book, titled The Dark Tourist in 2009. The book was first published and printed by Simon and Schuster in the United Kingdom, London, in 2010. Another edition was published in 2011. Dominic John Joly, also known as Dom Joly, was born on 15th November 1967, who is an English television comedian and also a journalist.

Joly also saw many unusual countries’ flag like North Korea, Cuba being flown. Joly also noticed some street art that shows an American flag but filled with bombs and skulls written in Iran that states: “Down with the USA”.
Joly visited America wanting to see places where assassinations took place and ground zero that 9/11 occurred. Joly met Sam Cadman who produced Trigger Happy TV with him, and drive all the way from Dallas to New York. People in America were not as friendly and were rather nasty. Joly was questioned at the immigration on why he would want to visit a place like Iran.
Going to Kiev in Ukraine was an enjoyable experience for Joly. The country was a full of life and great city. He went to Chernobyl to see the heart of the nuclear explosion zone and what a day in the 1986 under the old Soviet regime is.
Cambodia was Joly’s favourite destination out of all. He had his guide, Ohm and met many Kiwis that shared stories with him. He went there to see the different temples like the Angkor Wat before checking out the Killing fields, which was the dark Tourist part of his trip. There were very little things to do there. Pictures and photographs are generally not allowed there and the camera’s memory card needs to be checked. People in North Korea will look at foreigners in a funny way and are not interested in talking to
