Mirror, Mirror exhibition is a great idea for artists to showcase their work to the great city of York. Laure Drogoul, a Baltimore artist, had an open call for artists to represent themselves to the viewers and illustrate how artists saw themselves. The Marketview Arts allows an opportunity by having different exhibits throughout the year, so that regional artists can have their work seen by the public. Works in the gallery were chosen from the Philadelphia Sculptors organization. Mirror, Mirror exhibition is an excellent art exhibition that aspiring artists should see, so that they can showcase their work in the gallery. Laure Drogoul is interdisciplinary artist and performer who resides in Baltimore, Maryland. She works in a widespread range of medias including sculpture. Laure has demonstrated internationally and nationally including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the International House of Japan in Tokyo. She has received multiple Maryland State Artist Awards and in 2006, she was honored with The Janet and Walter Sondheim Prize, which is an award that is named after Janet and Walter Sondheim, who helped create Baltimore City as it is today. Walter Sondheim was one of Baltimore’s most important civic leaders for over 50 years and Janet was a teacher and volunteer tutor. Philadelphia Sculptors is an organization of professional sculptors in the Philadelphia region founded in 1997. Their purpose as an organization is to expand awareness of the role and value of sculpture through exhibitions. Their mission is to promote contemporary sculpture and serve as an advocate for sculptors. They have sponsored over 70 indoor and outdoor exhibitions including two major international shows. Lastly, they have had sponsored exhibitions featuring college students and new, emerging artists. The most interesting pieces that I felt were the best at the Mirror, Mirror exhibiton are, Aimee Gilmore’s “Aimee (31 lbs),” James Fuhrmans’s “It could happen to you,” Leslie Kaufman’s “Dissolving into the Forest Floor,” Ron Lambert’s "Hidden Ship Sinking", and Julia Ballaron’s “Ibuprofen” and Joaquin Calles Guzman’s “Postcard to my Card”, and Holly Smith’s “Good Intentions and Monkey Mind”. All of these works of art are universally different because of the various ways they saw themselves and in my opinion, were successful. By the way they showcase their work and how each piece has its own back-story as to why they made their pieces that certain way. Also, it does not matter to me if they are showing themselves, but if they are designed nicely, it will definitely catch the viewer’s eye. The theme that each artist used to guide them to use was how the artists really saw themselves. In Aimee Gilmore’s “Aimee (31 lbs)” she used as her inspiration; her body throughout her pregnancy, which I thought was really neat and personal. The artist was able to showcase, how the artist’s body was changing throughout her pregnancy. I enjoyed how the artist showed her transformation throughout her pregnancy and she saw herself for self-identity. In James Fuhrmans’s “It could happen to you” I really enjoyed his work because of the fact that we got to see ourselves within the sculpture and I felt that this piece is very creative. Also the viewer can really become part of the work by using a mirror to reflect on yourself inside barber wire, instead of imitating the work. The viewer gets a feel when looking into the mirror enlaced with barber wire that they are in some sort of jail or concentration camp from World War II.BV The texture that the barbwire gave off on the mirror is very intense because of the way the artist did the layout. The idea for “Good Intentions” that the audience can relate because she made this sculpture after made medical decisions for a loved one that she regrets deeply and everyone in their life or at some point will have to make important medical decisions that they will regret immediately.
