Temptation is a common human characteristic by it being a desire to do something that is especially wrong or unwise. In this case, making the decision to go up the mountain can be seen to be very unwise due to the knowledge of the significant amount of lives lost in attempt to reach the summit. Temptation is linked to curiosity, which helps understand why Jon Krakauer, the author is so tempted to join the expedition knowing the risks and consequences that come along with it. Being experienced in climbing and having his interest sparked in the activity from a young age had played a role in his decision to go up the mountain. He writes in chapter three, “When he asked if I was sure I wanted to go through with this, I said yes without even pausing to catch my breath.”, this shows that he was so tempted to go through with it because his curiosity towards the journey up the mountain could now lead up to an experience rather than just thoughts. (28). Anyone who reads Into Thin Air, will be able to see that temptation is what pulls in the characters. One may think that it is just easier to ignore it rather than giving into it, but I know it is easier said than done. Once curiosity is sparked, that is when temptation arises and I can completely understand why Jon took it upon himself to go through with putting himself in the mountains grasp. I feel it is also understandable because we want thing in life we cannot obtain so easily. Due to them not being so accessible we are lured into trying to get what we cannot
