I have conquered numerous mountains, but I might not be able to climb another one. Back in August 2015, I and my friends took a trip to East Java as a graduation present for ourselves. There were 3 mountains in our itinerary: Mount Merapi, Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen. My father once said that a good mountain climber should have three essentials: strength, determination and humbleness. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the last one as I used to be an arrogant person that time. The absence of humbleness led me into an accident which later forever changes my mind about how I should never underestimate anything. The success in conquering Mount Merapi and Mount Bromo brought us to Banyuwangi, a city at the easternmost side of Java Island. This city …show more content…
With the sun shining, the way back felt much easier. The weather became warmer and we could clearly see our path. As I had predicted before, there was no major difficulty we faced in climbing this mountain. As soon as we reached the second base, my friend, Michael, challenged me to get back to the first base in just 1 hour. I accepted this challenge in order to prove my mountain climbing skill. I have conquered Mount Breckenridge in Colorado and Jiu Zhai Gou in China; hence, I thought this task will give me no trouble. But I began to get tired and felt sleepy as I haven’t slept yet. I was halfway there when suddenly I lost my focus, misplaced my left foot on the ground and fell down. Pain and desperation were the only things I felt. I wasn’t able to move my body shortly afterwards so I just lay down on the rocky soil, waiting for my friends to come simultaneously. I felt like my arrogance has completely destroyed me.
I will never forget their surprised faces watching me sprawl powerlessly on the ground. For a brief moment, it seemed like they couldn’t believe what they saw. But then, they began to help me and moved me to a flatter surface. Anwar took care of my wounds while the others managed my scattered belongings.
