Gatorade: The Secret to Victory
The Secret to Victory advertisement associates Gatorade with hard work and success through the use of famous athletes mentioning their biggest sporting loss to indicate that drinking Gatorade will help make you succeed. The advertisement is directed at sports fans of all ages, and uses well-established athletes to make it credible. The underlying message of the advertisement from Gatorade is to get athletes and sports fans to buy their products. They achieve this through connecting with the viewers in an emotional manner and appealing to logic by using athletes that have succeeded and athletes that are known to be hard workers but have not achieved success yet.

Gatorade uses Michael Jordan, J.J. Watt, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Karl Anthony Towns, Kyle Schwarber, Serena Williams and Matt Ryan. By using successful athletes from a variety of sports, the advertisement will appeal to more people, mainly those who are fans of those sports. As these are some of the most famous athletes in the United States, the audience should know at least one of the multiple athletes featured making it a sincere appeal to them. For the audience who do not know sports, Gatorade tactically features each athlete in a place associated with their sport. For example with Karl Anthony Towns, his scene is set in a basketball locker room, making it clear to the audience what sport that athlete was famous for. Furthermore, four of the five sports being represented in the advertisement are listed in the top five sports in the United States whilst the fifth sport shown, Tennis, represented by Serena Williams, has almost 18 million American players. These statistics indicate that just by featuring Serena Williams, this advertisement could resonate with eighteen million tennis players and teach them to not give up when they lose and to drink Gatorade because Gatorade will lead to success. Moreover, by using Serena Williams, the most successful women’s Tennis player of all time, many aspiring Tennis players who idolise her will be inspired by her setbacks and achievements, and want to drink Gatorade so they can be just like their role model. This is how Gatorade uses ethos to increase the viewership of the advertisement and have a larger impact among the intended audience. Additionally, the advertisement has a gritty tone to it, with the athletes sounding rough and hungry for success.The resolute, tenacious tone of each sport star emotionally appeals to the audience.
