The use of anabolic-androgenic steroids in professional sports and in general is wrong. There are several health and reputational risks involved in taking these drugs. Everyday more and more teenagers are caught using these substances for their own purposes. Professional athletes and anyone else who uses them need to find a way to stop using anabolic-androgenic steroids. Anabolic-androgenic steroids include the male sex hormone testosterone and many of its synthetic derivatives (Harmer, 2010, pg. 26). It is acknowledged that AAS’s promote muscle growth and function, but they include potential risks of cardiac, cardiovascular, endocrine, and psychological dysfunction. This is a surprising and bewildering statistic that is a true head scratcher. One would wonder how a student in high school would have the money and the sources to get their hands on illegal steroids. Maybe one day the mystery will be solved. But there are some special circumstances when the intake of steroids may be necessary. Anabolic steroids can be prescribed under special conditions. Some of these conditions include steroid hormone deficiency, such as delayed puberty. Other conditions include diseases that result in the loss of lean muscle mass, such as cancer or AIDS (Anabolic Steroids). Anabolic steroids are taken either orally or injected into certain muscles. Sometimes they are applied directly on the skin as a cream or gel. Doses taken by abusers can range anywhere from 10 to 100 times the amount of prescribed doses for special medical conditions (Anabolic Steroids). The certain conditions above are reasonable to use anabolic steroids from a prescription. But none were legitimate reasons to get hooked on taking them for their own purposes.
