In 1985, an innocent man was sent to prison for a sentence of 36 years. This man’s name was Steven Avery. Steven was a resident on Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. A county where the police, the people you shouldn’t be afraid of, didn’t quite accept Avery because of an incident with his cousin, who was also the wife of the deputy, some time back, against Sandy Morris. The incident involved an empty fire arm weapon, which he pointed at Morris, when asked why he did it, his didn’t like the rumors Sandy was spreading. So because of this incident. The sheriff’s department saw the Avery’s as a problem, a burden to the community. In 1985, Steven was arrested in his home at about 11:50 at night, charged with rape an assault against someone named Penny Bernsteen. Penny was attacked on a beach nearby her house where she was going on a run. A man she’s never seen before attacked and sexually assaulted her. When she went to the police station and gave a description, Judy Dvorak instantly said “Oh that sounds an awful lot like Steven Avery” and from there this case was centered on Avery. The police only showed picture of Avery, and the drawing of the witness’s description, was just a drawing of an older photo the police had of Avery back from 1982. With the drawing and the witness’s statement as their only evidence, the police fled to Avery’s house to make an arrest. That night, the same day of the attack, Steven was arrested at 11:50 PM.
