Who is the offender? Steven Avery ,born July 9, 1962, a man from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, who was convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder in 1985. After serving nearly 18 years of a 32-year sentence, he was exonerated by DNA testing and released with help of the Innocence Project, only to be charged with murder two years later for the life of Teresa Halbach(Demos, & Ricciardi, 2015). Netflix documentary Making A Murderer was filmed in order to help tell his story.

Avery claimed that he talked to her but that she left after taking the photographs of the van. On November 3, 2005 a missing persons report was filed for Teresa, and a search was undertaken to locate her (Tikkanen, 2018). Two days later her vehicle was found at the Avery’s salvage yard. As well, in the Avery household, was Teresa car keys. While searching her car police found some person’s blood, which after processed was found to be Avery’s. During the investigation on the Avery property, human bones were recovered from a burn pit; found to belong to Teresa’s. Additional evidence included a bullet, found in Avery’s garage that had Teresa’s DNA(Tikkanen, 2018).
Trail and Sentence
November 11, 2005 Avery was arrested and charged with Halbach's murder, kidnapping, sexual assault and mutilation of a corpse. At this point, Avery was already charged with a weapons violation as being a convicted felon.
