In the intern of Earth Island Journal, Natale Servino’s article, “NASCAR Goes Green?”, she opens with a description of most Southern Rednecks dreams. She gives the description of NASCAR being “an endless stream of RV’s at a standstill, waiting to fill dirt parking lots. People congregating around barbecue grills, drink a few cold ones, and talk strategy” (Servino). Being from the south myself, I can relate to this scenario. In the article, Ms. Servino brings to light the pros and cons of NASCAR as a sport. Servino shows the economic advantages and disadvantages along with the environmental impact backing them up with quotes and opinions of both sides. There are those who are staunch supporters of the sport …show more content…
Pathos persuades the readers with what the author is feeling by using emotion. Servino uses references that are against NASCAR, more than she does for NASCAR, resulting in the readers to lean on the against side as well. Natale uses pathos a few times throughout her article. She states that, “Many Snohomish County residents were unhappy,” since the International Speedway Corporation “was prepared to invest only $50 million out of $250 million needed to complete the project,” she then goes on about other things the residents were unhappy about (Servino). While readers read about the residents being unhappy for several things, they will become unhappy themselves, and feel bad for the residents. Servino also mentions the harm that the new NASCAR track would do to the environment. She states that the concrete landscape built, “would collect oil, antifreeze, and other toxins from the shoppers parked cars,” she then goes on saying “Once the seasonal rains come through, storm drains would funnel the toxins directly into sensitive natural habitats, such as surrounding streams” (Servino). Stating this in her article would persuade me, since I like the outdoors, but should persuade many readers that the NASCAR track was indeed, harmful to the environment. The damage it could cause to the environment makes readers and myself upset. She also mentions later in the article that, Frank O Donnell stated, “By …show more content…
All the facts about the harm and damage to the environment and one’s health was very believable and true. According to www.oilprice.com, “From constant travel to keeping the stadium lights on, every sport is energy intensive. But NASCAR — in which drivers race vehicles 500 miles at speeds of 200 miles per hour — takes energy intensity to a whole new level,” this is an example of how NASCAR can harm the environment, which Servino was persuading us to believe through her article. Most NASCAR fans are multi-generational fans. Namely, they are fans because their parents are. They are very passionate and will be hard to convert no matter what reasoning is given because it’s in their blood. Servino uses great ethos by making her credibility and character strong, uses pathos to get the readers to feel the way she does about NASCAR, and uses logos to support all her opinions throughout her article and make the readers have a better understanding of what she believes
